The Heart of the Home

April 1, 2011 / Editorial

After shooting some TV spots for Kitchen & Bath Galleries last year, they asked me to capture some stills of one of their latest interior designs. This particular one was a bit challenging due to the inherent contrast between the white counter tops and dark cabinets. So I decided to let Mother Nature make my job a little easier by scheduling this shoot on an overcast day. This allowed me to supplement the soft daylight with my lighting. The client was very pleased. She recently entered these images into a competition and will now be featured on an international supplier’s website in April. I love working with business owners who take as much pride in their work as I do.

Joy Flakes

February 21, 2011 / Editorial

Spring is right around the corner. Early signs are already popping up in February, as they do sometimes in the South. But I couldn’t leave winter without sharing a few pics of Lucy enjoying a rare snowfall in Wilmington. We don’t get a lot of snow around here, but when we do you can better believe the kids are all over it. The flakes don’t last very long, but these images of flurry fever will last forever.

See Time Fly

February 11, 2011 / Editorial, Film

Even in a sleepy little beach town, things move pretty fast. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at a typical street corner in downtown Wilmington. I was honored to be a part of an amazing team of photographers and filmmakers assembled by Port City Community Church to shoot some time lapses in and around our city. This particular sequence (shown below) consists of over 650 frames shot over 75 minutes and compressed into 30 seconds. The team’s clips were used in a B&W video that included live-action images of the church band who covered a song called “This City is Yours.” The point? To rally the church around a second campus that will be opened in our city sometime in the next year. Financial Faith

January 27, 2011 / Editorial

I love making the most out of the mundane. Honestly, I think that’s why professional photography has survived – to turn the ordinary into extraordinary. This assignment was to visually convey the hard-working  and approachable folks at a local financial advisor group. I admire the faith in the agency (who had yet to work with me). “Go shoot what you see,” they said. “We trust you.” Those magical words tickle my heart. We didn’t have a lot of time at their offices, but I was very pleased with the edit. And so was my new client! Can’t wait to see these images on their brand new site. Looks like 2011 is off to a pretty good start.

Our Little Elf

December 18, 2010 / Editorial

Every year my wife asks me about 20 or 30 times what we’re gonna do for our Christmas card. And every year, I put it off. Like most folks I guess. Well one warm afternoon I decided to stop procrastinating and headed east with my favorite elf. Lucy loves the beach, just like her daddy. Even though the water was too cold for a swim, we had fun running around barefoot in December. She is by far the best gift that we have ever received. Hope you all have some amazing holiday time with your little elves! Peace and joy to all!

Focus on Fashion

December 6, 2010 / Editorial

These are three of my favorite images from our fashion spread for the Nov/Dec issue of Focus on the Coast. Local fashion expert Jess James and I had a blast shooting all day at an amazing private residence. She loves to craft a story around the shoot—in this case a holiday party with a little drama! Thanks to all who made this assignment so fun!

Fly Boys

/ Editorial

When a long-time friend called for some updated pics of her boys, she told me they were really into planes. So we took a ride over to the local airport where they got to explore and even climb inside a small plane’s cockpit. They were in heaven. And it created the opportunity for some pretty cool pictures. Up, up and away!

All in One for Mayfaire

December 1, 2010 / Editorial

It’s December and the holidays are in full swing. Wilmington’s upscale shopping mecca, Mayfaire, wanted their cover photo for Focus on the Coast to catch the eye of locals and visitors alike. The challenge was trying to show all of the various stores in one shot. After meeting with their marketing director, we agreed on a simple approach. For the picture we used a local model who fit the target market perfectly. We also included clothes, jewelry, makeup and even furniture to showcase all the variety you can find during a simple stroll through Mayfaire. Thanks to Paige, Melanie, Garry and Laurel for another great cover shoot!

Let Boys Be Boys

/ Editorial

I was happy to have several families ask me back to photograph their kids this holiday season. An hour at a park can turn into something truly precious. I like to let boys run and play, and I’m thrilled when the parents go along. Or better yet, come along for a game of hide and seek among the huge sycamore trees. A little texture treatment in post and you’ve got some special memories to savor and share. Thanks to Hank and Luke for all those smiles!

South ‘n France Handmade Bon Bons

November 29, 2010 / Editorial, Film

Lately I’ve been meeting local small business owners who provide unique products and services—take South ‘n France, for example. They offer delicious bon bons that are completely made by hand. Charlene Dupray, the “southern half” of the company, said she needed a short informative video for their website, SouthnFrance.com. Pascal Siegler, professional chef and the “French half” demonstrated how these exquisite chocolate morsels are made. The resulting 2-minute movie was designed to be a warm and charming peek at this cute couple and their entrepreneurial efforts. If you’re still shopping for a tasty gift for your clients or loved ones, look no further! (Disclaimer: several bon bons were consumed in the making of this film.)
