Surgery has come a long way folks. Take the DaVinci Surgical System for example. This thing brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “Look Ma, no hands!” The device was designed to reduce the time patients have to stay in the hospital by requiring smaller incisions where the robotic “fingers” can go in and fix you. New Hanover Regional Medical Center here in Wilmington needed some updated images of their baby and the skilled surgeons trained to drive this incredible machine. Working closely with Jeff Morvil, Creative Director at Morvil Design we set up the main group shot right in an actual operating room. The hospital’s job was to round up these busy doctors and have them all show up at the same time. No easy feat mind you. We captured several individual portraits and some cool still life shots along with the group pic. Now I’m no doctor, but I would say the prognosis looks great for those who need a little tuneup with these guys around. Special thanks to my crew for helping me pull this one off. Love you guys!

The Boys of Autumn
After a long, hot summer, most baseball players look forward to October. After all, this is when MLB’s elite slug it out in the World Series. One Saturday afternoon here in Wilmington, a local school team decided to break out their bats for another reason. The New Hanover High School Cats had a fundraiser to support research for ALS. They recruited sponsors to donate for each inning they played, and a scrimmage was born. Although the Cats’ spring season may be a good bit down the road, their hearts were certainly in the game.
BRC: The Rest of the Story
This summer I was contacted by a local organization called the Blue Ribbon Commission, which is made up of community leaders, local businesses and volunteers. Their mission is to stop youth violence in New Hanover County. Most people in our area have never heard of the Blue Ribbon Commission, which inspired an upcoming media blitz including a new website, billboards, radio and TV spots. I had the opportunity to present a concept for a 30-second TV spot and a short web video. After extensive research, writer J.R. Jones and I decided to focus on a core problem concerning the issue of youth violence—the absence of fathers. “The BRC Needs Mentors” became the overarching idea behind our assignment, and we played it out with two characters, Darren & DeSean. Our approach was to create a TV “teaser” spot (see earlier post) to build interest and drive traffic to the new website: www.brcyez.org. There, the viewer can see and hear the rest of Darren and DeSean’s story via our video, and (hopefully) become a volunteer. Click the full screen button in the lower right corner for better viewing!
Late One Afternoon
A friend wanted a special gift for her husband’s birthday. She thought some portraits of their gorgeous children might brighten his office. We waited and waited for a sunny afternoon, but the rains kept coming. So we waited some more. “It’ll be worth it,” I told her. “We need a certain light.” Then late one afternoon, the storms broke and we headed east to a place where the little ones could run and play and be kids. The sky was so amazing that day, almost as if we were being rewarded for our patience. And even though the golden light and blue water practically shouted “Shoot in color,” the preview window said otherwise. I hope these images bring my friends joy for years to come.
Music With Purpose
What do you get when you take the very best local musicians (ie, members of the local rock group Rio Bravo) and mix them up once a week for short power set? Answer: Music with purpose. My friends at Port City Community Church recently asked me to photograph the music portion of the service. With all access to this Christian mini-concert, it’s always a blast to show the world what we get to see (and hear!) every week. It’s clear to see the band plays with passion. Thanks for sharing your talent with us on Sundays!
Blue Ribbon Commission (TV teaser)
This is a 30-second “trailer” for a local organization called the Blue Ribbon Commission. The purpose of this spot is to build interest and drive traffic to the new BRC web site www.brcyez.org where the viewer can check out the rest of the story.
Boston MA
We used to live in the city and vacation at the beach. Now it’s the other way around. This summer, Katy and I headed up to Boston for a welcome getaway while Lucy had an equally terrific time at Grandma Camp. With temps in the 70’s and 80’s, it was a nice break from August in the South. We took a day trip to Cape Cod and saw some humpback whales on the ferry ride over. Of course I took some pictures while we were there. If only I’d thought to capture those funny yankee accents. To see more images visit http://tinyurl.com/3rualuk
“She’s Not My Sister”
The Gospel Music Channel in Atlanta hired me to photograph the “gallery” and the “unit” for an upcoming made-for-TV play. (Those are film-speak words for the poster and a portion of the live action.) Filmed here in Wilmington by local production company Swirl Films, the mostly African-American play featured some big names in Hollywood including Tony Grant, Christian Keyes and Jazmin Lewis. Everyone was very cool, and despite having only a few minutes with each actor, we captured several frames in various poses. The final poster was designed by another company.
The Boss
Coldwell Banker Commercial contacted me to photograph some agents, including the boss, for a website upgrade. Rather than the typical conference room location , I suggested a large building with lots of natural light. We wound up in downtown Wilmington’s brand-new convention center. It’s a beautiful, light-filled space located on the historic Cape Fear River. The agents were a bit nervous at first, but after a while we settled into a nice rhythm. Grayson Powell, the boss, added some levity by joking around. Everyone seemed pleased with their images and we are now negotiating shooting more of their team.
In the Garden with Greta
I was very happy when a friend asked me to photograph her daughter. She’s a gorgeous little girl and a little shy. So I suggested we go for a walk through the Arboretum here in town. It’s a popular location for photographers, but that morning we had the place all to ourselves. Greta wasn’t afraid of the camera at all. In fact, sometimes I felt like she was looking right through it. Her mom said that I captured her true essence. I can’t think of a better compliment than that.
